Iran executed two men identified as Mohammadamin Biglari and Shahin Vahedparast after they were convicted of attempting to storm a military facility and seize weapons during January unrest, the judiciary’s Mizan news outlet reported on Sunday. Mizan said Iran’s Supreme Court had upheld the death sentences and described the defendants as among “rioters who sought to commit mass murder” by trying to steal weapons and military equipment.
Amnesty International said the two were among a group of four defendants in the same case who faced execution. The executions follow last week’s killing of 18-year-old Amirhossein Hatami, who was convicted in the same case tied to nationwide anti-government protests that were met with a major security crackdown.
Amnesty has reported that 11 men connected to the protests remained at risk of imminent execution. The rights group also said many protest-related defendants were “subjected to torture and other ill-treatment in detention” and were convicted in “grossly unfair trials that relied on forced confessions.”
