Kathmandu, May 1 (ANI) — The Indian Embassy in Nepal marked Buddha Jayanti in Lumbini on Friday, partnering with the Lumbini Development Trust and Lumbini Buddhist University. The programme included a painting exhibition by schoolchildren, prayer chanting by monks from India and Nepal, and a cultural evening, the Embassy said in a post on X.
Highlights of the event were a Buddhism-themed Kathak performance by an ICCR troupe led by Deepti Gupta and a musical presentation by a Nepali band fronted by sarod maestro Suresh Raj Bajracharya. The Governor of Lumbini Province, Krishna Bahadur Gharti Magar, attended as the chief guest.
The celebration coincided with global observances of Buddha Purnima (Vesak), which commemorates the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Siddhartha Gautama. Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama also conveyed greetings, noting that the Buddha’s teachings remain relevant today and can guide people toward compassion and peace. He encouraged followers to engage with the teachings thoughtfully—by listening, reading, reflecting and applying them in daily life—and offered prayers that embracing these teachings will help create a happier, more peaceful world.
