New Delhi, May 11 (ANI) — India is coordinating with multiple partners to keep energy flows steady amid rising tensions in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told an inter-ministerial briefing that New Delhi is not reliant on a single supplier and is working to ensure uninterrupted energy supplies from diverse countries. He added that all Indian seafarers operating in the region are safe.
Jaiswal reiterated India’s longstanding call for peace, saying the country favors diplomacy and dialogue to restore stability in the Gulf region. He also said a list of leaders attending the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi will be released later and that India expects representation from all BRICS member and partner countries.
Responding to media reports about evacuations, Jaiswal said there is no plan to evacuate Indian nationals from the UAE or Fujairah port and asked reporters to refer to the MEA fact-check that dismissed such stories as unfounded.
Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, confirmed that Indian-flagged vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz have not paid any taxes on passage. He said nearly 10 Indian-flagged ships and one foreign-flag vessel carrying Indian cargo have safely reached India via the Strait in recent days, and that about 13 Indian-flagged vessels remain in the region. Authorities are monitoring crew welfare and requirements daily and coordinating closely with the MEA and Indian missions to facilitate safe movement.
The statements come amid broader regional tensions, including calls from Iran for the United States to end what Tehran describes as pressure and blockades. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei outlined Tehran’s demands — an end to conflict, lifting of blockades, cessation of maritime attacks, release of frozen Iranian assets, and guaranteed safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz — which Iran says are part of a framework for regional stability.
