Tokyo [Japan], April 24 (ANI): India and Japan held the 8th Army-to-Army Staff Talks in Tokyo from April 22-24, 2026, focusing on further strengthening defence cooperation and interoperability.
The Indian Army and Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) discussed enhancing interoperability through expanded bilateral exercises and subject-matter expert (SME) exchanges. The Indian Embassy in Japan noted in a post on X that the talks reviewed cooperation measures and outlined future interactions across diverse domains. The delegation also called on Nagma M Mallick, India’s Ambassador to Japan, and General ARAI Masayoshi, Chief of Staff of the JGSDF.
An Indian Army statement said both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific and described the exchanges as productive in reviewing ongoing defence cooperation and planning future engagement.
The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed Japan’s decision to review its long-standing framework governing the transfer of defence equipment and technology, calling it a positive step that could boost bilateral security cooperation. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “India welcomes Japan’s review of the three principles on the transfer of defence equipment and technology. Defence and security cooperation form an important pillar of the India-Japan special strategic and global partnership.” He added that both countries have consistently worked to deepen collaboration under their shared strategic vision and referenced commitments in the Joint Declaration on security cooperation to increase practical cooperation in support of national security and economic dynamism.
