Lisbon, May 2026 — India has successfully secured the extradition of Abhay Rana from Portugal, Indian authorities said on May 10. The Central Bureau of Investigation coordinated the transfer in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Embassy of India in Lisbon and other agencies, following an Interpol Red Notice and a formal extradition request.
The Embassy of India in Lisbon thanked Portuguese authorities and police for their cooperation in the handover. Officials said Abhay Rana is accused of multiple serious offences in India and will be produced before Indian courts to face trial.
Indian officials described the extradition as the result of sustained, high-level coordination between the CBI, Haryana Police, the MEA, MHA, the Embassy in Lisbon and Portuguese law enforcement agencies. The operation was carried out under the bilateral extradition treaty between India and Portugal, which was ratified on January 11, 2007.
The treaty establishes a legal framework for mutual transfer of wanted individuals and includes safeguards compatible with European legal standards. Those safeguards include assurances that extradited persons will not be subject to the death penalty and limitations on custodial sentences in certain circumstances, as well as the requirement of dual criminality, meaning the alleged offence must be punishable under both countries’ laws.
The embassy also acknowledged the assistance publicly, including on social media, and called the transfer an important step in India’s ongoing efforts to bring fugitives residing abroad to justice. The reporting for this account is based on a communique from ANI.
