Nairobi, April 27 (ANI) — India and Kenya strengthened customs cooperation with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the exchange of pre-arrival information for goods during the 10th India‑Kenya Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting.
The agreement was signed by Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) Member Yogendra Garg and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Commissioner General Dr Lilian Nyawanda, in the presence of India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Trade Regina Akoth Ombam.
According to a statement from the High Commission of India in Nairobi, the MoU is intended to speed up clearance of shipments, strengthen risk-management systems and facilitate smoother bilateral trade by enabling timely exchange of cargo information.
The 10th JTC, co-chaired by Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and Principal Secretary Regina Akoth Ombam, resumed formal Commerce Secretary‑level talks after a seven-year hiatus. Delegations from both countries reviewed the full spectrum of economic engagement, with particular emphasis on boosting trade, improving market access and addressing tariff and non‑tariff barriers.
Discussions covered key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, digital public infrastructure, fintech, energy (including renewables) and manufacturing. Participants also evaluated development partnership projects and explored deeper cooperation in logistics, infrastructure planning and capacity building.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a diversified, balanced and future‑oriented economic partnership. They agreed to strengthen institutional mechanisms to facilitate trade, resolve outstanding issues and encourage greater business‑to‑business engagement between India and Kenya.
