Kushinagar (Uttar Pradesh), May 1 — Singapore High Commissioner to India Simon Wong extended greetings on Buddha Purnima and recalled his recent visit to Kushinagar, the site of the Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana. In a post on X, Wong said the visit “stays with me on this Buddha Purnima,” adding that the Buddha’s message of compassion and inner peace “feels as alive today as ever.” He wished everyone observing the day a moment of stillness and reflection.
The Dalai Lama also offered his greetings on Vesak, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Lord Buddha. He said the Buddha’s teachings remain deeply relevant in modern times and can guide people toward compassion and peace. Citing the Buddha’s insight into dependent arising, the Dalai Lama urged followers to “harm no one and to help all beings,” calling those principles both compassionate and practical for our troubled times.
He encouraged believers to be 21st-century Buddhists by studying the teachings, reflecting deeply, and putting them into practice. Marking the 2,570th Buddha Jayanti, the Dalai Lama offered prayers and expressed the hope that applying the Buddha’s teachings in daily life will help create a happier, more peaceful world.
