Thimphu, May 13 (ANI) — BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb arrived in Bhutan on Wednesday as leader of an Indian parliamentary delegation and received a warm welcome. Deb, the Lok Sabha member from Tripura West, said he looks forward to substantive discussions aimed at further strengthening the long-standing friendship and parliamentary ties between India and Bhutan.
Deb posted on X that he was pleased with the reception and eager for meaningful engagements. He had earlier attended a preparatory meeting in Delhi for the visiting parliamentary delegation, held at Committee Room No. 1, Block A, Extension to Parliament House. The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral parliamentary cooperation and deepening the special relationship between the two countries.
India and Bhutan established formal diplomatic relations in 1968. The relationship rests on the 1949 Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, which was revised in February 2007. Regular political and official exchanges have long been a hallmark of the ties between New Delhi and Thimphu.
High-level visits have reinforced the connection: Prime Minister Narendra Modi made Bhutan his first overseas visit after taking office in 2014 and returned for a state visit in August 2019 after beginning his second term. More recently, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar visited Bhutan and offered prayers at Simtokha Dzong on April 11, describing the dzong as an important example of Bhutan’s architectural heritage and enduring Buddhist traditions.
