Tehran has confirmed that Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi will travel to New Delhi to take part in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 14–15, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaiel Baghaei said in an interview with India Today Global. The visit is being presented as a step to deepen ties and coordination between Iran and India within multilateral forums.
Baghaei highlighted the close working relationship between the two countries as fellow members of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, saying there is a “good level of cooperation and coordination” in both bodies. He described the concurrent meetings in New Delhi as important for Iran and said Tehran looks forward to bilateral exchanges with other attending ministers, specifically noting talks with India’s foreign minister.
The New Delhi meeting forms a key element of India’s 2026 BRICS chairship and brings foreign ministers together at a sensitive moment in regional politics. Since clashes between the US and Iran that erupted on February 18, Araghchi has held frequent contacts with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, including at least four high-level discussions. Those conversations focused on the escalating tensions in West Asia and their broader geopolitical ramifications.
According to the Iranian side, Araghchi updated Jaishankar on developments Tehran described as strikes by the US and Israel and warned such actions risk undermining regional and global stability. He has urged greater cooperation among BRICS members to help safeguard international order, while reaffirming Iran’s stated right to self-defence.
The forthcoming BRICS meeting follows Araghchi’s earlier trip to India in May 2025, his first since becoming foreign minister in August 2024. During that visit he co-chaired the 20th India–Iran Joint Commission, and participated in sessions on May 7–8 marking the 75th anniversary of the India–Iran Friendship Treaty. That visit included talks with Jaishankar and a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu and is cited as laying groundwork for the current push to expand political, strategic and economic cooperation.
