Port of Spain, May 9, 2026 — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held extensive talks with Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and members of her Cabinet, conducting a comprehensive review of bilateral relations and exploring new avenues of cooperation.
Speaking on social media after the meeting, Jaishankar said the discussions focused on delivering commitments made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year while identifying fresh initiatives to broaden partnership between the two countries. As part of his visit, he and the prime minister presented Made‑in‑India laptops to Trinbagonian schoolchildren; Jaishankar described the gesture as a message of learning, awareness and opportunity.
The visit also saw the signing of several agreements designed to deepen cooperation across multiple areas. The accords cover tourism cooperation, the solarisation of the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs building, a package of Quick Impact Projects, and the establishment of an Ayurveda Chair to promote traditional medicine and knowledge exchange.
Jaishankar’s meetings in Trinidad form part of a broader three‑nation tour of the Caribbean. The engagements build on Prime Minister Modi’s July 2025 five‑nation tour — which included Trinidad and Tobago — during which Modi addressed the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament, held bilateral talks with PM Persad‑Bissessar and discussed expanding ties in economic cooperation, disaster management, climate action, defence, technology, healthcare and agricultural research.
During Modi’s 2025 visit he was awarded the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the country’s highest honour, and he and PM Persad‑Bissessar participated in a ceremonial neem‑tree planting at the Red House as part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.
The recent meetings underline a continued effort by both governments to translate political commitments into tangible projects and people‑to‑people initiatives, particularly in education, renewable energy and cultural and medical exchange.
