Vikram Doraiswami began his assignment as India’s Ambassador to China by laying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Jintai Art Museum in Chaoyang Park. Accompanied by the museum’s curator Yuan Xikun, he also paid respects to Rabindranath Tagore at the Indian Embassy in Beijing.
On arrival in Beijing, Doraiswami was received by Charge d’Affaires Angeline Premalatha and Li Jianbo, Deputy Director of the Asia Department at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He had received his credentials from President Droupadi Murmu the previous week.
Earlier, Doraiswami called on Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi to discuss geostrategic issues, bilateral engagement, and measures to strengthen existing mechanisms amid sensitivities in India-China ties.
The visit takes place alongside other recent India–China contacts. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Dong Jun, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Bishkek. Singh described the exchange as a pleasure.
Separately, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George held talks with China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Liu Zhenmin, on the global climate agenda. Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India stands ready to be proactive in advancing global climate action and remains engaged in multilateral processes under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.
Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong has emphasized that China values India’s role as the rotating President of BRICS. Xu referenced a meeting between Chinese special envoy Zhai Jun and India’s MEA Secretary (South) Neena Malhotra, saying the two sides maintain communication on major international and regional issues and hope BRICS consultations on the Middle East will contribute constructively to regional peace and stability.
