Karachi [Pakistan] April 29 (ANI): Major thoroughfares in Karachi’s commercial district were brought to a standstill after residents of Railway Colony protested prolonged, unannounced power cuts reportedly lasting up to 16 hours daily. The demonstration near Shaheen Complex choked traffic on I.I. Chundrigar Road, Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road and nearby streets, with queues stretching for kilometres toward Saddar and Pakistan Chowk, Dawn reported.
The midday protest quickly escalated as men, women and children blocked intersections, chanting against K-Electric and demanding immediate restoration of electricity amid extreme heat. Commuters, office workers, students and patients were left stranded for hours. Residents said continuous outages deprived families of sleep, halted water pumps, spoiled food, prevented device charging and worsened conditions for the ill.
Stranded passengers warned of health risks, including delayed access to hospitals in Saddar. While some observers acknowledged the protesters’ grievances, others criticized the road blockages for harming the wider public, Dawn noted.
Police intervened and dispersed the crowd after roughly 30 minutes, but traffic disruption persisted for more than two hours before normalcy returned. K-Electric said power to parts of Railway Colony had been cut over non-payment of bills and added that supply was restored after local representatives assured the company of clearing dues, according to Dawn.
