Colombo, April 29 (ANI): India and Sri Lanka reaffirmed their expanding maritime partnership during the fourth edition of the bilateral diving exercise, IN-SLN DIVEX 2026, held in Colombo from April 21–28.
The exercise featured the Indian Navy’s diving support and submarine rescue vessel INS Nireekshak alongside diving teams from both navies, enhancing operational coordination and professional synergy, the Indian Navy said.
A specialised engagement for complex underwater operations, IN-SLN DIVEX aims to boost interoperability. Activities included advanced deep-sea diving evolutions such as mixed-gas dives, with harbour and open-sea dives demonstrating technical proficiency.
A notable element was mixed-gas dives over World War-era wrecks SS Worcester and SS Perseus. Divers from both navies carried out successful deep-sea dives beyond 55 metres, strengthening joint capabilities in underwater search, rescue and salvage while reinforcing coordination in the Indian Ocean region.
Rear Admiral SJ Kumara, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Area, visited INS Nireekshak during the exercise and praised the Indian Navy’s ongoing support in training Sri Lankan divers, emphasizing exchange of best practices and expertise.
The exercise also included non-operational activities to build camaraderie: a beach clean-up at Galle Face, friendly sports fixtures and yoga sessions.
The commanding officer of INS Nireekshak paid tribute at the IPKF Memorial, laying a wreath for Indian soldiers who fell during Indian Peace Keeping Force operations in Sri Lanka. Two BHISM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita and Maitri) cubes were handed over under India’s Aarogya Maitri initiative to bolster disaster response and medical preparedness.
On completion, INS Nireekshak received a ceremonial send-off, underscoring the strong bonds and enduring maritime partnership between the two navies. IN-SLN DIVEX 2026 highlights sustained bilateral collaboration in line with the MAHASAGAR vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) and a shared commitment to peace, stability and security in the Indian Ocean Region.
