Washington DC [US], March 19 (ANI): US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor will visit Sri Lanka and the Maldives from March 19–24 for high-level engagements to deepen cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
In Sri Lanka, Gor will meet senior leaders to reaffirm the US-Sri Lanka relationship and strengthen collaboration on safeguarding vital sea lanes and securing ports, reinforcing trade and commercial ties, and advancing a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific, the US State Department said. Discussions are expected to focus on maritime security, trade, and investment, reflecting Sri Lanka’s strategic importance.
In the Maldives, Gor will hold talks with senior government officials to reaffirm Washington’s commitment to bilateral ties, marking 60 years of diplomatic relations. The talks will emphasize security cooperation, support for critical infrastructure, and economic growth.
The visit underscores the United States’ aim to reinforce regional stability, promote a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific, and ensure the security of critical shipping lanes. Officials will discuss collaborations including port development, maritime domain awareness, and regional counterterrorism, and will seek to strengthen people-to-people ties and expand trade and investment.
The trip forms part of broader US strategy to deepen engagement across South and Central Asia and support a stable, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific. (ANI)
