New Delhi, April 28 — United Nations General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock called on Tuesday for a renewed global commitment to the UN Charter and stronger multilateral cooperation as geopolitical tensions and strains on the international system grow.
Speaking at a press briefing at UN House in New Delhi, Baerbock warned that multilateralism and international law are facing severe pressure. “Today, the United Nations, multilateralism, and international law are not only under pressure but under direct attack,” she said, pointing to widening fragmentation that is affecting the core pillars of peace and security, development, and human rights.
She emphasized that no nation can tackle today’s interconnected challenges alone, citing climate change, global health crises such as COVID-19, and the economic fallout from conflicts — including the war in Ukraine and disruptions to global trade routes. Baerbock underscored that adhering to international law and delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals serves the interests of all countries.
During her visit she held bilateral talks with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, focusing on deepening cooperation around shared global priorities. She described India as an essential partner in advancing multilateral solutions to pressing international problems.
Baerbock also called for a more effective and responsive United Nations, noting ongoing UN80 reform efforts aimed at improving delivery at the country level and increasing the organization’s impact on people’s lives.
Invited by the External Affairs Minister, Baerbock’s trip to India is part of a wider visit to Asia. While in New Delhi she is scheduled to meet senior government officials, representatives from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the UN Country Team in India, as well as representatives of the UN Country Team in Bhutan. She is due to travel to China on April 29–30 for further high-level engagements.
