Washington, DC [US], December 11 (ANI): United States Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove warned that President Donald Trump risks becoming “the president who lost India” amid rising tensions over tariffs, visa fees and political grievances, speaking at a congressional hearing on the US-India Strategic Partnership.
Kamlager-Dove stressed India’s importance to the US in defence, energy, AI, space and advanced technologies, saying the bilateral relationship “will be defining for both countries in how we place ourselves in the 21st-century world order.” She added that cooperation through the Quad “helps maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
She argued that goodwill has sharply declined, asserting Trump inherited a partnership with an energised Quad, growing defence-technology ties, coordinated supply-chain efforts and strong political momentum, but has weakened it. “Flush, flush, flush — flushed down the toilet,” she said, attributing the shift to personal grievances rather than national interests.
Kamlager-Dove warned Trump could push India away while signalling openness to Russia, accusing him of eroding trust through trade policies and an apparent focus on obtaining a Nobel Peace Prize. She pointed to tariffs — a 50 per cent levy on Indian goods and a 25 per cent tariff on India-linked Russian oil imports — as stalling high-level engagement and contributing to the postponement of the Quad Leaders Summit.
She also criticised the administration’s new USD 100,000 fee on H-1B visas, noting Indians hold 70 per cent of these visas and that the fee harms workers who support US innovation in technology, science and medicine. Kamlager-Dove said these actions are creating uncertainty across Asia, sending troubling signals as China watches regional dynamics, and amount to “cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face,” causing “real and lasting damage” to trust between Washington and New Delhi.
