In 1824, the presidential election was thrown to the U.S. House of Representatives after none of the candidates — John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, William H. Crawford and Henry Clay — won a majority of the electoral vote. Although Jackson had the most electoral votes, Adams ultimately became president.
In 1955, Rosa Parks, a Black seamstress, was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, after she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus. Her arrest sparked a yearlong bus boycott and helped fuel the U.S. civil rights movement.
In 1965, the first “Freedom Flight” from Cuba landed in Miami. Over the next eight years, twice-daily flights carried more than 250,000 Cuban refugees to the United States under a joint U.S.-Cuban agreement.
