South Korea’s military said it scrambled fighter jets after Chinese and Russian military aircraft entered and then left its Korea Air Defence Identification Zone (KADIZ) on Tuesday.
Seven Russian planes and two Chinese planes entered the KADIZ at about 10 am (0100 GMT) and subsequently departed, with no breach of South Korea’s territorial airspace, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.
An earlier Newsis report had said 11 planes had entered the air defence zone. The Russian and Chinese aircraft were identified, and South Korean fighters were deployed to respond to any contingencies, the JCS added.
South Korea’s military told Yonhap News Agency the aircraft spent roughly an hour in the KADIZ off the country’s east and south coasts. Chinese and Russian forces typically carry out joint operations around the Korean Peninsula once or twice a year, Yonhap reported.
