Nine people, including six children and three women, were killed in cross-border firing and mortar strikes in Pakistan’s Bajaur district over March and April, a local administration report said Friday. Several others were wounded.
The Deputy Commissioner of Bajaur published a casualty list that blamed Afghan forces for the attacks in frontier areas. The deaths occurred in the Mamond and Salarzai tehsils of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the list said.
Images and videos of affected families have circulated on social media, and residents told reporters they are living in fear and condemned what they described as deliberate targeting of civilians.
Officials said Pakistan’s security forces carried out retaliatory strikes against alleged firing positions and militant locations across the border, while taking measures to try to avoid civilian casualties. Similar cross-border incidents have previously been reported in other border districts, including Khyber, Kurram and Waziristan, and have led to repeated loss of life.
