A revealing moment in court put Shivon Zilis in the spotlight. When Elon Musk was asked under oath about her, he began, “She is my chief of staff,” then paused. He later clarified publicly: “We live together. And she’s the mother of four of my children.” The exchange brought renewed attention to Zilis amid Musk’s high-profile legal dispute involving OpenAI and Microsoft.
Zilis was born in Markham, Ontario, to a mother of Punjabi origin, Sharda Zilis, and father Richard Zilis. She grew up in Canada, attended Unionville High School and went on to Yale University, where she played hockey. After graduating in 2008, she entered IBM’s cognitive computing division, helped found Bloomberg Beta, and earned a spot on Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list in 2015.
Her involvement with AI projects began in earnest around 2016, when she started advising OpenAI and later served on its non-profit board through 2023. Around that period she is believed to have formed a personal relationship with Musk. In industry roles she worked at Tesla from 2017 to 2019 on Autopilot and chip design efforts and later held a senior position at Neuralink.
Zilis and Musk have four children together: twins born in 2021, a daughter in 2023 and a son in 2024. Until the recent court exchange much of the relationship had remained private.
Her relevance to the lawsuit stems from more than the personal connection. Court filings and messages shown at trial suggest she kept lines of communication open with OpenAI leaders after Musk left its board in 2018. One message shown in court quoted her asking Musk whether she should remain friendly with OpenAI “to keep info flowing” or distance herself; Musk reportedly recommended staying close. Other evidence portrays her as an intermediary who exchanged updates with senior OpenAI figures, including Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever, and on occasion provided input sought by leadership.
Musk’s suit argues that OpenAI moved away from its original non-profit mission. Because Zilis was positioned close to both Musk and members of OpenAI’s inner circle, her testimony could be consequential: it may help determine whether she acted purely as a professional contact or served as an informal conduit between Musk and the organization as tensions escalated. As the trial continues, both sides are likely to scrutinize her communications and influence to understand what role she played in the unfolding disputes.
