Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], December 10 (ANI): The Tibetan community in Shimla gathered Wednesday to mark the 36th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the 14th Dalai Lama, an observance that coincided with World Human Rights Day.
Chief guest and Jonang Monastery head Kyabje Khentrul Kunga Choephel Chok offered Mendel Tensum to a portrait of the Dalai Lama. Other participants, including LTA Secretary Tenzin Palden, Central Tibetan Administration Chief Representative Officer in Shimla Lhakpa Tsering, representatives from Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti Bauddh Sewa Sang, Prof Vidhya Sagar Negi and several monks, performed the traditional offering of white scarves.
Students of the Sambhota Tibetan School led the singing of the Tibetan and Indian national anthems and a Nobel Peace Prize song. Attendees observed a minute of silence in tribute to Tibetans who have self-immolated for the Tibetan cause. Tibetan Buddhist monks and followers also held prayers and cultural performances to express gratitude.
Lhakpa Tsering described the day as auspicious. He said the community is celebrating the Dalai Lama’s 90th year as “Karuna Divas” (Compassion Day) and recalled the 1989 Nobel announcement, noting that the Dalai Lama framed the prize as recognition for truth, peace and courage. “We lost our country; Chinese destroyed so many monasteries, they killed our people… But His Holiness has been guiding us to follow peace… He says we will solve this through dialogue community to community and country to country without any kind of violence,” Tsering said.
Wangyal Lama, a Tibetan Buddhist monk, told ANI that Tibetan communities worldwide mark the anniversary. “It is His Holiness’ message of peace and happiness that we celebrate. There should be no kind of fighting; the world needs happiness and peace. Nothing else, only this message we want to spread,” he said. (ANI)
