Delhi — On April 26 the Russian Embassy in India held a Volunteer Cleanup Day in the national capital to honor the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The event, organised around the embassy compound, brought together Ambassador Denis Alipov, diplomats and embassy staff for a communal clean-up inspired by the Russian tradition of Subotnik.
Subotnik is a long-standing voluntary public service in Russia, where citizens come together to clean public spaces, workplaces and neighbourhoods. Ambassador Alipov said the embassy organised the drive both as a nod to that tradition and as a tribute to India’s Swachh Bharat campaign launched on October 2, 2014. He noted that the embassy team wanted to contribute to the cleanliness effort and strengthen ties through practical cooperation; NDMC crews had already done much of the work nearby, but volunteers still carried out a visible clean-up around the premises.
Dressed in a white T-shirt and red cap, Ambassador Alipov joined colleagues sweeping and tidying the area. Participants described their involvement as a heartfelt gesture of support for India and for cleaner public spaces. Many volunteers said they were glad to make a small contribution to the national cleanliness drive and hoped their actions would resonate with the Indian public and government.
Several volunteers reflected on the wider impact of Swachh Bharat, saying the campaign has reached mass levels across India and can serve as an example globally. One newcomer to Delhi praised the city and called the experience both meaningful and memorable, encouraging others to take part in similar drives at least once in their lives.
Participants emphasised that the clean-up was also a way to demonstrate friendship and deepen people-to-people links between Russia and India. By joining hands on a simple, community-driven task, the embassy team aimed to show practical solidarity and support for a shared goal of cleaner, healthier urban spaces.
The event illustrates how local volunteer traditions and national campaigns can intersect: Subotnik-style volunteerism meeting Swachh Bharat’s mission to promote cleanliness, civic engagement and civic pride.
