New Delhi [India], February 7 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday departed for a two-day visit to Malaysia, where he will hold bilateral talks with his counterpart Anwar Ibrahim.
The visit is Mr. Modi’s third to Malaysia and his first since bilateral ties were elevated to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” in August 2024, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
India is exploring defence-sector collaboration during the visit, including the sale of Dornier aircraft and maintenance support for Scorpene submarines and SU-30 aircraft, the ministry added.
PM Modi will also meet members of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia and business representatives. Malaysia hosts a 2.9 million-strong Indian diaspora—the third-largest worldwide—and a 2.75 million-strong PIO community, the second-largest. Malaysia is an important partner for India in ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific and is central to India’s Act East Policy.
The Torana Gate in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, a gift from India symbolising the two countries’ friendship, was jointly inaugurated by Narendra Modi and then-Prime Minister Najib Razak on November 23, 2015.
India-Malaysia ties were raised to a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ during Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to India from August 19-21, 2024. The relationship had earlier been elevated to an ‘Enhanced Strategic Partnership’ in 2015 during PM Modi’s visit. Diplomatic relations between India and Malaysia were established in 1957.
PM Modi and Anwar Ibrahim met on the margins of the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6, 2025. PM Modi also participated virtually in the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit in Kuala Lumpur on October 26, 2025, and the two leaders spoke by phone on October 22, 2025. (ANI)
