Peshawar, April 28 — Staff and pensioners of the University of Peshawar staged a protest on Monday over delayed March salaries and unpaid pensions, obstructing Jamrud Road outside the campus and causing disruption for commuters amid hot weather, local reports said.
Imtiaz Khan, president of the Class-III Association, described the university as facing severe financial strain and faulted both the university administration and the provincial government for not taking effective action. He said lower-ranked employees received March pay in instalments, many faculty members were given only 40 percent of their salaries, and retired staff have not yet received pensions. Khan warned the demonstration would intensify unless full and timely payments are arranged.
Separately, the Peshawar University Teachers Association has written to Chief Minister Sohail Afridi seeking emergency financial aid for the institution. In the letter the association reminded officials that UoP has served the province for more than 75 years as an entry point to higher education and a training ground for teachers, civil servants and other professionals.
The teachers association said the universitys capacity rests on its workforce, which is now under grave stress: around half of March salaries remain unpaid and pension payments for the month have not been released. Many employees and pensioners are reportedly struggling to cover essential household costs such as rent, utilities, medicines and their childrens schooling.
Despite repeated payment delays over the past year, faculty and staff have largely kept classes running, the association noted, but added that continuing without assurance or relief is unsustainable. The letter argued that public universities depend on state investment, and when an institution cannot compensate those who keep it functioning, the impact extends beyond campus to families across the province.
