It’s not every day that a neighbourhood rooftop grabs social media attention, but a Jalandhar rooftop has become the talk of the town thanks to an international twist.
After spending 26 years in New York City, NRI Gurjeet Singh Matharu installed a replica of the Statue of Liberty on the fourth-floor rooftop of his home in the Kishanpura area. He said the aim was to stay connected to a place that has become an integral part of his life.
People from nearby localities and farther afield have been visiting to see the unusual installation up close, with many describing it as a “mini New York” experience in Punjab. A PTI tweet included a video of the site and Matharu discussing the installation.
Reactions on social media were quick and divided. One user remarked that in Chandigarh and Mohali people build water tanks in shapes like tractors or balls, and now he has a Statue of Liberty. Another called it “quite creative,” while a third asked, “What was the need?”
