Oslo — Norway’s government said Friday it will propose a law to bar children under 16 from using social media and to make technology companies responsible for verifying the ages of young users.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said the move is intended to protect a more traditional childhood. “We are introducing this legislation because we want a childhood where children get to be children,” he said, adding that play, friendships and everyday life should not be dominated by algorithms and screens.
The minority Labour government said it will present the bill to parliament by the end of 2026.
