Israel said Tuesday it had killed Gholamreza Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ all-volunteer Basij force, in a strike on Monday. Iran did not immediately acknowledge his killing.
The Israeli military said the Basij were “part of the armed apparatus of the Iranian terror regime” and that, under Soleimani’s command, they led major repression operations during internal protests, especially as demonstrations intensified. The statement accused the Basij of employing severe violence, carrying out widespread arrests and using force against civilian demonstrators.
