Kathmandu, May 1 — The Indian Embassy in Nepal observed Buddha Jayanti in Lumbini on Friday in collaboration with the Lumbini Development Trust and Lumbini Buddhist University. The programme featured a painting exhibition by schoolchildren, joint prayer chanting by monks from India and Nepal, and a cultural evening, the Embassy said in a post on X.
Highlights included a Buddhism-themed Kathak performance by an ICCR troupe led by Deepti Gupta and a musical set by a Nepali band led by sarod maestro Suresh Raj Bajracharya. The Governor of Lumbini Province, Krishna Bahadur Gharti Magar, was the chief guest at the event.
The celebration coincided with global Buddha Purnima (Vesak) observances, which honor the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Siddhartha Gautama. The Dalai Lama sent his greetings, saying the Buddha’s teachings remain relevant and can guide people toward greater compassion and peace. He urged followers to engage with those teachings by listening, reading, reflecting and putting them into practice, and he offered prayers that doing so will help foster a happier, more peaceful world.
