Washington — The gunman who tried to force his way into the ballroom at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner is believed to have been targeting members of the Trump administration, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said Sunday.
Blanche said investigators believe the 31-year-old suspect traveled by train from California to Chicago and then on to Washington, where he checked in as a guest at the hotel hosting one of the city’s glitziest events Saturday night.
President Donald Trump was hurried off the stage when shots were heard. The suspect is in custody and faces charges, Blanche said.
Blanche made the comments during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press.
FBI agents were shown arriving at a residence linked to the suspect in Torrance, California, as authorities continued their probe.
