Nairobi, May 3 — Heavy rains and sudden flash floods across Kenya have killed at least 10 people this week, the National Police Service said. Most fatalities — seven — were recorded in the eastern region, where rising waters have closed roads, damaged property and forced many families from their homes.
Police warned that two key bridges were swept away, severely disrupting transport and the movement of goods in both the Coastal and eastern regions. Local authorities have ordered closures of vulnerable routes and are working to assess damage and support displaced residents.
Officials urged people living in flood-prone areas to stay alert, avoid floodwaters and follow guidance from local emergency services. The latest deaths come as Kenya continues to grapple with increased extreme weather: in March, floods killed at least 112 people, an outcome authorities and experts have linked to the growing impacts of climate change.
