Dushanbe [Tajikistan], December 2 (ANI): An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 struck Tajikistan on Tuesday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 75 km.
In a post on X, the NCS reported: “EQ of M: 3.9, On: 02/12/2025 04:35:14 IST, Lat: 37.15 N, Long: 72.43 E, Depth: 75 Km, Location: Tajikistan.”
Earlier, on November 26, a magnitude 4.2 quake hit the region at a depth of 90 km. The NCS posted: “EQ of M: 4.2, On: 26/11/2025 15:18:33 IST, Lat: 38.10 N, Long: 73.51 E, Depth: 90 Km, Location: Tajikistan.”
Tajikistan is mountainous with diverse topography and is vulnerable to climate hazards. It is prone to earthquakes, floods, drought, avalanches, landslides and mudslides. The most vulnerable areas include glacier-dependent river basins that supply hydropower and irrigation, fragile mountain ecosystems and isolated forests; mountainous and riverine terrain increases landslide and land-degradation risk.
The World Bank Climate Change Knowledge Portal notes that climate change exacerbates Tajikistan’s vulnerabilities, with about 30 percent of glaciers predicted to disappear by 2050.
Tajikistan remains one of the world’s most isolated countries, a situation worsened by landslides, debris flows and floods that can render bridges unsafe and roads impassable and, over time, weaken flood defenses protecting exposed communities.
More than 60 percent of the country lies in high seismic-risk zones, adding the threat of rare but potentially devastating earthquakes to chronic hazards.
Infrastructure in Tajikistan is gradually deteriorating due to insufficient maintenance and repeated exposure to natural hazards. The Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery advises blending hazard information and climate-change scenarios with local knowledge when designing or rehabilitating infrastructure to improve resilience over time.
