Tehran, March 17 (ANI): Iranian state media Press TV on Tuesday shared a first-person view (FPV) video showing a drone flying over the US embassy compound in Baghdad.
The footage came after reports that the US Embassy and a hotel in Baghdad were targeted by drones early Tuesday, with video appearing to show air defences engaging a projectile near the embassy, CNN reported. Iraq’s Majnoon oil field in the south was also reported attacked, the spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of Iraq’s armed forces said, according to CNN.
In a post on X, Press TV described the drone as flying like a “free bird” over the embassy compound and said an Iraqi resistance group released FPV footage showing the drone passing over the compound without triggering air defences.
Anadolu Agency, citing an unnamed security source to Shafaq news agency, reported that four drones attempted to target the US Embassy. The source said Iraq’s air defences intercepted and shot down all drones before they reached their targets, with one drone falling on Abu Nuwas Street and another landing near the embassy inside the Green Zone.
Iraq’s Ministry of Interior confirmed a drone struck the Al-Rasheed Hotel early Tuesday local time. After forensic on-site and technical inspection, the ministry said the drone hit the hotel’s upper fence, causing no loss of life or significant material damage.
CNN geolocated videos showing an explosion near the US Embassy and clips consistent with a drone impacting the area; other footage showed air defences engaging a projectile over Baghdad roughly 600 metres from the embassy compound.
Multiple explosions rocked Baghdad, and Al Jazeera, citing witnesses and security sources, reported at least four people were killed in an air raid on a building used by an Iran-backed group. The deadly attack in the Jadiriya district followed explosions near the heavily fortified Green Zone and verified footage showed fire and smoke rising near the embassy while additional clips showed air defence systems intercepting several drones.
On Monday, the US Embassy and Consulate in Iraq had issued a Level 4 warning for the country. (ANI)
