Colombo [Sri Lanka], December 7 (ANI): As Sri Lanka reels under Cyclone Ditwah, the death toll has risen to 627, with several hundred still missing, Daily Mirror reported on Sunday, citing the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
Ditwah brought relentless rain, flash floods and landslides, sending river levels to historic highs, submerging towns and damaging critical infrastructure. According to Daily Mirror, 190 individuals remain missing as rescue and search efforts continue. All 25 districts have been affected, impacting 2,179,138 people from 611,530 families.
Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply said damage assessments to houses will begin tomorrow. A committee appointed under the Presidential Secretariat will carry out the process to identify households eligible for government support.
India is assisting with rescue and relief under Operation Sagar Bandhu. The Sri Lankan Army said a 73-member Indian Army medical team that arrived on December 2 has continued support. The Indian Army established a fully functional field hospital from December 5 to aid affected communities, providing outpatient care, minor surgeries and emergency services. The field hospital has treated over 1,250 people, conducted major emergency surgeries and installed three Bailey bridges to help restore critical connectivity, the Indian Army said in a post on X.
