Doha, May 2 — Gurreet Singh Gopi, an Indian national diagnosed with terminal-stage cancer, was repatriated from Qatar to India on May 1 after coordinated efforts by a community group and the Indian Embassy in Doha, ANI reported.
Gopi, who had worked in Qatar for many years, was living alone and became physically weak following his diagnosis. With no family support on site, he relied on local assistance as his condition declined.
Singh Sewa Group Qatar, an associate organization of the Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), provided sustained aid including home-cooked meals, emotional support, and help completing the documentation required for repatriation. Kulwinder Singh Honey and Garima Mehandiratta worked closely with Eish Singhal, First Secretary at the Embassy of India in Doha, to coordinate logistics and paperwork for the medical evacuation.
Their combined efforts enabled Gopi’s safe return to India by Qatar Airways. He was received at Amritsar Airport on May 1 and given immediate medical attention. Ambassador Vipul of India to Qatar expressed gratitude to all agencies and individuals involved, including Hamad Medical Corporation and the airline.
Gopi is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Tarn Taran and is expected to pursue specialized care at PGI Chandigarh in the coming days.
