Brasilia [Brazil], December 10 (ANI): Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, during his visit to Brazil, met Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, Commander of the Brazilian Navy, to discuss expanding cooperation between the two navies across defence industry, technology development, innovation, training and capacity building.
The Indian Navy spokesperson said the discussions aimed to strengthen India–Brazil naval cooperation, focusing on operational engagements, training exchanges, hydrographic collaboration, information sharing and enhancing Maritime Domain Awareness. Both sides examined avenues for cooperation in defence industry, technology development, innovation, exchange of best practices and capacity building.
The apex-level engagement reaffirmed the mutual resolve to deepen strategic convergence and the India–Brazil maritime partnership, contributing to stability in the global maritime commons, particularly in the Global South.
A tripartite memorandum of understanding was signed between the Indian Navy, the Brazilian Navy and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited on exchange of information related to maintenance of Scorpène-class submarines and other naval vessels. The MoU is intended to improve life-cycle support, enable experience sharing in maintenance, logistics and training, strengthen cooperation between government agencies and industry, and bolster defence R&D and technological innovation to sustain Scorpène-class submarines and other naval platforms.
The visit follows recent bilateral engagements: a 40-member delegation from Brazil’s Naval War College visited India’s Naval Headquarters in November to discuss enhanced maritime training cooperation, and a Brazilian defence delegation led by Admiral Guilherme Da Silva Coasta visited the College of Defence Management, Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff. In July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brazil resulted in a strategic roadmap for the next decade around five priority pillars, including defence and security. The joint MEA statement noted convergent views on defence and security, welcomed growing defence cooperation, the Agreement on the Exchange and Mutual Protection of Classified Information, and the establishment of a Bilateral Cybersecurity Dialogue to deepen cooperation on cybersecurity.
