Gujrat, Pakistan, April 5 — Activists from Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) staged a sit-in Friday to press for the establishment of a Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) hospital in Jalalpur Jattan, protesting what they described as long-standing neglect of the town’s healthcare infrastructure, Dawn reported via ANI.
Though elevated to tehsil status almost four years ago, Jalalpur Jattan — one of Gujrat district’s largest urban centres with a population nearing 600,000 — still lacks a fully functioning THQ hospital. Protesters assembled at Adda Tam Tam, the city’s central square, accusing district officials and the Punjab government of administrative apathy and failure to provide essential medical services.
The demonstration was led by local JI leaders including Emir Mudabbar Siddique and PP29 representative Anas Mujahid. Civil society members and patient welfare groups joined the sit-in, carrying banners and calling for immediate action. Speakers said residents are forced to rely on a small civil hospital that suffers from shortages of doctors, paramedics and vital medicines, while smaller towns such as Kunjah and Dinga already have THQ facilities.
Protesters also highlighted Jalalpur Jattan’s role as a centre for textile-based cottage industry and said the lack of adequate medical services harms both public health and local livelihoods. JI leaders announced their campaign will continue and warned of further demonstrations if authorities do not respond; a follow-up sit-in was scheduled for April 12.
Participants also offered funeral prayers in absentia for police officer Umar Beig, who was killed during a recent encounter with robbers near Karianwala, Dawn reported.
