US Ambassador Sergio Gor said the United States will pursue more commercially beneficial opportunities with Assam after attending the swearing-in of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati. Posting about the event on social media, Gor said the US and Assam already share many commercial ties and, under Sarma’s leadership, officials will identify additional win-win scenarios for both sides.
Sarma, who made history by becoming the first BJP chief minister in Assam to secure two consecutive terms and the only non-Congress leader to do so, took oath at a ceremony held at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara. Four MLAs were also sworn in as ministers: BJP’s Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, AGP’s Atul Bora, and BPF’s Charan Boro.
The oath-taking was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior union ministers including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nirmala Sitharaman. Several foreign diplomats and leading industrialists were present to witness the ceremony.
The ambassador’s remarks signal an interest in deepening economic and commercial engagement between the US and Assam following the new state government’s formation. (Updated May 12, 2026)
