Oslo, May 11 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make an official visit to Norway from May 18–19, during which a Nordic-Indian Summit will take place, the Norwegian government said in a statement.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation with India, describing India as the world’s largest democracy and a key player on climate, technology, trade and international security. Støre said the visit highlights the need to work together to uphold international cooperation and a rules-based world order amid global instability.
This trip will be the first visit to Norway by an Indian prime minister since 1983. During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with Prime Minister Støre and will join meetings with Indian and Norwegian business and research representatives at the Norway-India Business and Research Summit. The Norwegian king will also receive Prime Minister Modi in audience.
Støre noted that India, Norway and the EFTA countries reached a free trade agreement in 2024 that entered into force last year, calling it an important breakthrough that opens significant opportunities for business and industry in both regions. Trade between Norway and India has more than doubled over the past decade, and officials expect further increases in trade, investment and economic cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi and Støre will also take part in the third Nordic-Indian Summit, which brings together India with the Nordic countries — Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden and Norway. The summits are aimed at strengthening collaboration on the green transition, digitalisation, innovation and trade, while fostering closer political dialogue and expanded economic ties.
