Dhaka, May 9 (ANI) — The Bangladesh Awami League on Saturday congratulated BJP Legislative Party leader Suvendu Adhikari on his election victory in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and on assuming office as Chief Minister. In a statement issued on behalf of the party’s Central Working Committee, the Awami League described the electoral mandate as “a unique recognition of Suvendu Adhikari’s strong leadership.”
The party highlighted the shared history, language and cultural ties between Bangladesh and West Bengal and said it was confident the new chapter in West Bengal politics would take those relations to greater heights. The statement also underlined the longstanding relationship between Bangladesh and India and expressed expectation that bilateral cooperation and the momentum of mutual development would be further strengthened during the tenure of the newly elected state government.
The Awami League extended wishes for success and good health to Adhikari and his cabinet, and for continued peace and prosperity for the people of West Bengal.
Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior union ministers including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan, as well as regional leaders such as Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta and Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami.
BJP sources had congratulated Adhikari after he was named leader of the BJP Legislature Party in West Bengal following the party’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
On May 4, Adhikari won two high-profile constituencies — Bhabanipur and Nandigram. Election Commission figures after counting showed Adhikari defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by a margin of 15,105 votes. He also secured 127,301 votes in Nandigram at the conclusion of counting.
The election delivered a major political shift in West Bengal. The BJP won a commanding majority in the Assembly while the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), after 15 years in power, secured 80 seats. Voter turnout reached record highs: 93.19% in Phase I and 91.66% in Phase II, producing a combined turnout of 92.47%, the highest since independence.
