Balochistan [Pakistan], March 25 — The provincial government has extended the suspension of academic activities until March 31 and ordered the shutdown of mobile internet services in several cities, citing security concerns, The Balochistan Post reported.
An official notification from the Department of Colleges, Higher and Technical Education said all public and private educational institutions — including schools, colleges, universities, degree and intermediate colleges, polytechnic institutes, Balochistan Residential Colleges (BRCs), and cadet colleges — will remain closed during this period. The extension follows an earlier notification issued on March 9. Authorities said the step was necessary given the prevailing security situation to protect students and staff and to meet administrative needs. The notification barred all academic and extracurricular activities and instructed relevant authorities to enforce the directive, with actions possible for violations.
Separately, mobile internet services were suspended in parts of Balochistan, including Quetta, Noshki, Kharan, Dalbandin, Mastung, Kalat, Sibi and surrounding areas. The provincial interior ministry attributed the suspension to security concerns and did not give a timeline for restoration.
Political and social groups have criticized the measures, warning of impacts on communication, daily life and access to information. Authorities previously imposed heightened security around March 23, during which internet services and train operations were halted in some areas. Officials provided no specific threat details and described the actions as precautionary. Independent assessment of the situation is limited by restricted access and scarce official information.
