An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck Bangladesh on Friday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. Tremors were felt across Kolkata and several adjoining districts in West Bengal, prompting panic among residents.
People rushed out of homes, schools and offices as the shaking lasted several seconds. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, but authorities are conducting assessments.
Emergency services in Bangladesh and India have been put on alert. Seismologists are monitoring for aftershocks and advising residents to remain cautious and avoid unsafe structures.
